São Paulo, Brazil – President Joe Biden arrived in Brazil Sunday afternoon, marking the first visit by a U.S. head of state since President Barack Obama’s trip in March 2011. Biden landed in Manaus, where he toured the Amazon Museum and conducted an aerial survey of the rainforest.

In a statement, President Biden unveiled a package of initiatives aimed at strengthening Amazon protection, including a USD $50 million investment in the Amazon Fund to support preservation, monitoring, and deforestation-combatting efforts. This new commitment brings total U.S. contributions to $100 million dedicated to preserving the vital ecosystem.

Biden spent about four hours in the region. In the late afternoon, he traveled to Rio de Janeiro, where he will attend the G20 summit starting Monday, joining leaders from the world’s largest economies.
