Former Justice Minister arrested in Brazil, accused of facilitating attacks in the country’s capital

São Paulo, Brazil – Former Justice Minister of Brazil, Anderson Torres, was arrested this Saturday as he landed in Brasília after spending a week on vacation in Florida.

Torres is accused of having allowed supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro to launch the violent attack that shook the Brazilian capital on Sunday, January 8.

His arrest was determined by Supreme Court judge Alexandre de Moraes .

At the time of the attacks in Brasília, Torres was the secretary of public security for the Federal District, a central figure in the city’s security planning. There are suspicions that he deliberately weakened security that day and the role of security forces is also being investigated. Some agents are being accused of collusion, or omission.

Torres was Minister of Justice during the government of former President Bolsonaro and after his term ended on December 31, he took over public security in the Federal District on January 2.

The former president has also been in Florida since before the inauguration of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
